Day 8: the Old City before Breakfast

This is the Damascus Gate. It is a Northern Gate into the old City of Jerusalem. On the top you can see the present Gate. The first century Gate is the one down in the excavation. The city has grown higher than the original gate.
At the end of this post you will be able to see that the street level of the newer city are even higher.

Every Gate into the city has soldiers. Joelle got her picture taken with them.

This is just inside the gate of the Muslim quarter of the old city. Just outside the gate, a lady, dressed like these, spit at my feet. It didn't make me feel welcome, but I don't think she has issues with me personally.

This is the "Via Dolorosa" - this early in the morning, it is very quiet.

On our way back out, the sun was up and shining on the limestone. It had a very pretty glow. Because of this glow, Jerusalem has been called "the City of Gold".

With our back to the present Damascus Gate you can see how much higher the street level of the present city is. This picture is from Joelle.
